The Twilight Years of their Lives… 2

Don't abandon your grandparents....

Recap: Riya is very angry with her grandparents for being conservative and wanting to know about everything that goes on in her life. She deals with it by spewing out her anger at her friends with whom she is meeting for a project. Read on… (To read the first part click here.)

Rohan :- Have u tried to understand them or even tried talking with them? Give it a shot! Just try…

Riya :- It’s no use. They are headstrong and conventional.

Shraboni :- Just imagine yourself 50 years from now Riya. Where will you be, and what will you do?

Riya (offended):- What do you mean Shraboni? How dare you say such a thing? I hate you all for all these things. I quit this damn project. Damn you all!  (Riya makes an attempt to walk out) I have had enough of all this.

Riya storming away…..

Swati, Rohan and Amitava :- Riya, if you walk out of here now, you have to walk out of our relationship and friendship as well. You decide.

Riya (angry):- Good riddance to bad rubbish. Goodbye.

She is almost walking out, when quickly…

Shayani :-  Hold it right there. Don’t leave, we need you. You are very much part of us. Let me explain Riya.

Shayani takes Riya’s hand and then she gently puts her hands on the latter’s shoulders…

Shayani:-What Shraboni meant was that: try to put yourself in place of a 70 year old grandma in the year 2060. Information, technology, science, knowledge and life-style has improved and advanced so much that mankind has become techno geeks and morons. All they will think of is gadgets, softwares and space odysseys. They will be inflicted with the virtualtechnosyndrome virus where the human factors and relationships will fade away, and it will pave the way for robots and androids. Then what will you do,Riya?

A long pause and Riya is in deep thought

Shraboni :- Yes Riya, what will you do then? Won’t you crave for a human touch, someone human to talk to- not a machine, gadget, robot or android? Won’t you have the desire to be with your children and your grand children in person and not a clone or hologram?  Will they have time for you, or will they be too busy in their virtual world?

Riya now understands what Shraboni meant to say….She shrugs her shoulders.

Riya :- I don’t know.  I’m baffled. You’ve opened up my eyes Shraboni. Thanks. Now I realize…..

Shayani:- Have you thought about how do your grandparents feel when you ignore them or how lonely, aloof they really are? They long for your company. Won’t you help them Riya?

Riya(pensive):- Yes, I will help them.

Swati, Rohan and Amitava:-  And will you help the other senior citizens as well?

Riya:- Yes, of course I will. Thanks guys for your help.

All(Unitedly):- That is what friends are for. (They embrace)

Shraboni:- I guess you owe an apology to someone Riya.

Shraboni takes Riya to the elderly gentleman

Riya :- I’m sorry uncle for being rude to you and also to my grandparents. I’m truly sorry. Please forgive me.

Riya touches the man’s feet and takes his blessings

Elderly man: – Its okay my dear girl. I forgive you. (They embrace) Will u help the other senior citizens too?

Riya :-  Of course we will! (They all come together to hold hands)
